St. Baldrick's Event

January 27, 2010

Dear Educational Professional,

Childhood cancer is the #1 disease killer of children in the United States. A child diagnosed with cancer gets 1/6 of the federal research support for every year of life saved as compared to support allocated to each patient affiliated with AIDS. These facts may not mean a lot to you, but for our family they mean a lot. Our youngest daughter was diagnosed with High Risk Pre-B Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia 2 days after her 2nd birthday. She is currently attending McAullife Elementary School as a Kindergartner.

Thirty years ago her diagnosis would not have had those odds We are organizing St. Baldrick's Day on Saturday, March 13th at Preble High School. St. Baldrick's is a non-profit organization raising funds for the Children's Oncology Group, which is the research group that funded and designed our daughter’s clinical trial study. St. Baldrick's began as a casual conversation between friends and has exploded into the world's largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research.

To date, events have taken place in 24 countries and 50 US states, raising over $68 million, and shaving more than 106,000 heads. These shavees shave their heads in solidarity of children with cancer, while requesting donations of support from friends and family What we are asking for is for Education Professionals to help us. We are looking for shavees. If you have been touched by a child with cancer, form a team or shave as an individual, and raise money by shaving. It is quiet easy; Amelia cut her hair last year for Wigs For Kids.

For the Educational Professional that raises the most money, we are offering a $150 award to purchase supplies to enhance learning, $75 for the second place and a lifetime of memories for everyone else. There are so many incentives that you can do for fundraising: a human sundae, buy a piece of duct tape for a $1 and be duct taped to a wall, penny drives it is endless. There are so many ideas on the St. Baldrick's website.

Won't you help us with this fight? For as  Amelia is a survivor at the age of 6, she has also lost her best friend to cancer. It is easy to register, just go to www.stbaldricks.org and register for the event at Green Bay Preble High School. Then at the event let the registration table know that you are shaving for a school and you would like to be entered into the competition for the Education Professionals. Wouldn't it be great to support a child in your school that is fighting or has fought cancer? For more information please call (920) 406-9667 or go to www.stbaldricks.org.
